Meet up at Cusco main square

Walk to a 30-year old stall on Santa Catalina Street to sample the award-winning tamales (awarded by Gaston Acurio, Peru’s best chef) made of juicy white corn that has a sweet-salty flavor.

Move on to the central market in San Pedro for some refreshing fruit drinks (mango, papaya, and passion fruit) from vendors who call their male customers “papi” and their female customers “mami”–their unique way of saying, “Please let us serve you.”

Next stop is San Santiago for some tocto or Chicharrón: deep-fried pieces of pork, often served with mote (corn kernels) and sweet potatoes.

Move on to Wanchaq for its famous Rocoto Relleno, spicy stuffed rocoto peppers filled with ground beef, onions, olives, and hard-boiled eggs, topped with melted cheese. Other notable street food in this area are sopa de gallina and ceviche.

Make your way to Market of Molino to sample the most representative street food in the Andes—the Choclo con Queso (literally means corn with cheese) made up of large kernels of Andean corn served with slices of fresh cheese. Follow it up with another corn-based delight—the chicha morada–a refreshing drink made from purple corn.

Head over to Pampa Del Castillo for some tasty empanadas or the favorite Lomo Saltado, a popular street food version of this classic Peruvian stir-fry dish, featuring marinated strips of beef, onions, tomatoes, and French fries, often served with rice.

Finally, the tour ends at a watering hole for bankers and lawyers on Belen Avenue (Avenida Belen) to chew on some savory anticuchos (grilled beef heart with baked potatoes and spicy sauce) then wash it all down with the favorite drink in Cusco: Cusqueña beer.
